Can Salesforce Replace Your Student Information System (SIS)?

Weighing Salesforce vs. your K-12 SIS? See exactly where Agentforce Education wins and where PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, or Skyward still lead.

If you run a K-12 school and already use Salesforce or are considering implementing it, you may wonder if you still need a Student Information System (SIS).

The answer is more nuanced than you might think. Agentforce Education, Salesforce’s purpose-built cloud for education, covers a meaningful and growing portion of what SIS platforms offer, but these traditional platforms still have specific advantages in critical areas.

This post walks through both sides of the comparison using Agentforce Education and the three most widely used K-12 SIS platforms in North America to help you determine if fully moving to Salesforce is right for your school.

Not yet on Agentforce Education? If your network is still running on the Education Data Architecture (EDA) or an older Salesforce configuration, see our separate post on migrating to Agentforce Education before applying this comparison.

The Most Popular SIS Platforms

Market data puts three platforms at the top of the K-12 SIS landscape in North America. PowerSchool holds the largest footprint at approximately 23% of identified implementations, followed by Infinite Campus at roughly 10% and Skyward at around 7% (ListEdTech, November 2025). All three were built for K-12 academic data management and share a common core capability set.

As a starting point for our comparison between a traditional SIS and Agentforce Education, we’ll take a look at these three platforms’ core capabilities.

Academic operations management is fundamental for SIS platforms – master scheduling, attendance tracking, gradebook management, and compliance reporting. However, SIS platforms typically lack enrollment marketing, fundraising and advancement management, and AI capabilities. While growing, AI is primarily oriented toward attendance alerts and compliance reporting rather than proactive family or student engagement.

The following sections compare each platform against Agentforce Education across the full capability set. The comparison is split into two sections: Core Academic Capabilities and Engagement and AI Capabilities.

Core Academic Capabilities

This is what traditional SIS platforms are designed to do and where they shine. The truth is Agentforce Education needs customization to compete in several of these capability areas, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Attendance and Grade Management

While Salesforce’s K-12 Architecture Kit includes functionality for tracking attendance and grades, it is not a schedule-driven daily attendance tool with state-compliant code sets and automated parent notifications built in. However, these can be custom built.

Similarly, grade data can live in Agentforce Education, but it does not include a teacher-facing gradebook out-of-the-box where teachers enter grades period by period. For schools with traditional classroom operations, these gaps matter.

The right model for you is likely a SIS handling the transactional layer and Agentforce Education surfacing that data for relationship and intervention work.

State Compliance Reporting

Agentforce Education does not include pre-built state compliance reporting. The three major SIS platforms do, and each vendor maintains those integrations as their core product.

This matters differently depending on your school type:

  • Charter and public schools face mandatory state reporting requirements. Retaining your SIS for this function is the right call for the foreseeable future.
  • Private and independent schools face lighter state reporting obligations in most jurisdictions, which reduces (but does not eliminate) dependence on a SIS for compliance output.

For all school types, this is an integration challenge, not a fundamental gap. Many schools run their SIS for compliance output while Agentforce Education manages relationships and engagement. The two systems connect through a well-designed integration layer.

Engagement and AI Capabilities

Agentforce Education is not just comparable to a traditional SIS in these areas, it handles things a SIS was never designed to do. This is where Salesforce has the advantage.

Parent/Guardian Portal

Traditional SIS platforms have portals to share key information such as grades and attendance about individual students, but Agentforce Education is a full data system (CRM) that captures a wealth of relationship and engagement data. A family in Agentforce Education has a complete relationship record ecosystem: every interaction, every application, every sibling, every outreach touchpoint, every fundraising connection. This data can be combined with grades and attendance, and any other integrated platform and made available to parents and guardians in a unified Experience Cloud portal.

Recruitment and Enrollment

A SIS tracks a student once they are enrolled. Agentforce Education tracks families from the first time they encounter your school: website visits, inquiry submissions, open house attendance, application starts, waitlist position, and eventual enrollment. For any school system competing for families across multiple school options, this pipeline visibility drives enrollment outcomes directly. No SIS platform provides this.

Charter schools and private schools with open enrollment cycles benefit most here. District-assigned public schools have less need for prospecting tools, though family engagement and communication capabilities still apply.

AI-powered Student Support

Agentforce Education’s agents handle recruitment inquiries, course guidance, academic advising support, and student success alerts in ways traditional SIS platforms are only beginning to approach. An Agentforce agent can answer a family’s question at 11 PM, help a student check course eligibility in real time, and surface a proactive alert to an advisor when a student shows early indicators of falling behind.

The three major SIS platforms have attendance alerts and some predictive reporting. The gap is significant and widening with each Salesforce release cycle.

Advancement and Alumni Relations

School networks with a development function or alumni engagement goals have no SIS path for these capabilities. PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, and Skyward do not cover fundraising or alumni relations. Agentforce Education includes a full Advancement and Alumni Relations module, including the Philanthropic Research Agent for major gift work.

This is primarily relevant for charter networks with philanthropic funding, private and independent schools with established development programs, and Catholic school systems with diocesan advancement teams. For public schools and most charter-only operators, this capability is less immediately relevant, but can still be leveraged.

What the Right Architecture Looks Like

For most K-12 school systems, the right solution is Agentforce Education as the relationship and engagement platform, with a SIS integrated for the core academic functions they were designed for: state compliance reporting, master scheduling, teacher-facing gradebook, and special education documentation.

When these two systems are connected properly, data flows in both directions. A student admitted in Agentforce Education is created in the SIS automatically. Attendance and academic data from the SIS is pushed to Agentforce Education where student success staff can act on it. The family that applied two years ago for a sibling still has their full history in the CRM.

From the field: The schools that get the most value from this model drew a clear line before implementation: Agentforce Education owns the relationship, the SIS owns the academic record. When both systems try to own the same data, you get reconciliation problems and staff who trust neither system.

For K-12 school leaders evaluating a new SIS purchase right now, it is worth asking whether Agentforce Education gets you far enough within your planning horizon that a SIS investment is worth it. Salesforce continues to add core academic capabilities, but with all technology roadmaps, it takes time to implement and refine. For schools already deeply invested in a traditional SIS, but looking to build a 360 degree view of their students, families, fundraising and alumni engagement, the integration path is the right answer today.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

A few questions that help frame this decision for your specific use case:

  • What does your state require for compliance reporting, and is your SIS vendor actively maintaining that integration? If you are in a state where your SIS handles a complex reporting relationship, that is a real dependency.
  • What is your school type? Charter and private schools competing for families in open-choice markets have the strongest case for Agentforce Education’s enrollment and engagement capabilities. District public schools may prioritize integration and compliance functionality over recruitment tools.
  • Where is your enrollment growth coming from? If family engagement and recruitment pipeline management are your growth levers, that is Agentforce Education’s strongest ground.
  • Do you have a development function or alumni engagement goals? If yes, there is no SIS path to that capability regardless of school type.
  • What is your SIS contract situation? If you are 18 months from renewal, now is the time to do this analysis. If you just signed a three-year deal, the integration model is your path.

If you want to work through this analysis for your school specifically, that is exactly the kind of conversation we’d love to have with you.
